Welcome to Zero-Downtime Live Migration of KVM Virtual Machines. Hardware maintenance is inevitable. But for a high-traffic VPS environment, taking a server offline for upgrades means unacceptable downtime. Let's explore how KVM allows you to move running virtual machines across physical nodes without dropping a single packet.

1. The Concept of Live Migration

Live migration is the process of moving a running Virtual Machine (VM) from one physical hypervisor host to another. To the end user, this transition is completely transparent. The VM's OS doesn't reboot, its network connections remain intact, and its applications continue processing requests as if nothing happened.

2. Shared Storage is Mandatory

For a live migration to work, both the source and destination physical hosts must have access to the exact same VM disk image. This requires a shared storage architecture, such as NFS, iSCSI, or a distributed file system like Ceph. If the disks aren't shared, you must perform a "storage migration" as well, which is much slower and harder to achieve with zero downtime.

3. The Pre-Copy Memory Transfer Phase

The magic of KVM live migration happens in the memory transfer phase. KVM starts copying the VM's RAM from the source host to the destination host while the VM is still running. Because the VM is running, its memory is constantly changing (dirty pages). KVM repeatedly sweeps through the memory, copying only the pages that have changed since the last sweep.

4. The Millisecond Stop-and-Copy

Once the amount of remaining "dirty" memory is small enough to be transferred in a fraction of a second, KVM finally pauses the VM on the source host. It transfers the final few megabytes of memory and the CPU state. It then resumes the VM on the destination host. This pause is so short (usually under 100 milliseconds) that TCP connections do not drop.

5. Network Re-Convergence (Gratuitous ARP)

When the VM wakes up on the new physical host, the network switches still think its MAC address is located on the old host's port. The destination hypervisor immediately broadcasts a Gratuitous ARP packet. This forces all physical switches in the data center to instantly update their CAM tables, routing incoming traffic to the new host immediately.

Conclusion

Mastering KVM live migration transforms server maintenance from a stressful, downtime-inducing ordeal into a seamless daytime operation, ensuring your VPS infrastructure remains truly highly available.
